Thailand: New Rules for Visa Overstay

Harsher punishments for those who overstay their visas will take effect from March 20th 2016 as part of the government efforts to crack down on crime.

Under new Interior Ministry regulations, foreign travelers who overstay more than 90 days will be banned from re-entering the country for one year.   People who overstay for more than one year but less than 3 years will face a re-entry ban of 3 years and those who overstay for more than 3 years but less than 5 years will face a re-entry ban of 5 years.

People found to have overstayed for more than 5 years will be barred from re-entry for 10 years.

These penalties a significantly more harsh than the small fine that was previously levied for visa overstay.
