Brazil to Open Doors to Skilled Immigrants, Slam Shut to Others

Brazil’s rapid growth has led the country to become the world’s sixth largest economy, and as a result job growth has outpaced available skilled workers. Recent studies indicate that there is a shortage of qualified professionals of between 200,000 and 400,000 people. This demand is not only because of the growth of the oil, mining and information technology industry, but also due to preparations for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Olympic Games. Brazil has been drawing educated professionals from Europe as they leave their homeland in search of work abroad. “They see Brazil as a land of great opportunities for growth and development, where there is demand for skilled labor. Brazil needs engineers, scientists and technical personnel, and Brazil’s schools are unable to train enough professionals,” said Mauricio Santoro, a Brazilian political analyst with the independent Getulio Vargas Foundation

Alberta, Canada Looking for Skilled Workers to Immigrate to Fill Labor Shortages

Alberta’s Premier Alison Redford was recently in the U.S. in an effort to find workers who will immigrate to Canada to help fill their labor shortages. A new Calgary Economic Development study found that Alberta is expected to increase by more than 600,000 workers by 2021, and if immigrants don’t come, that will lead to around 114,000 vacancies. "We've had discussions with a number of labor organizations in Chicago who've been doing work with decision-makers in the United States — and with the Canadian and U.S. ambassadors — to try to find avenues where we might be able to accelerate access of skilled labor into Alberta," said Redford. The study by Calgary Economic Development also found that several cities in Canada, along with the U.S., UK, and Ireland are the most likely to have suitable candidates for the open positions.
